I was tremendously moved by three recordings of Nick Cave: Push the Sky Away, Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen. These paintings are portals to his music through my eyes. The titles are lines of lyrics from his songs.

Music has a tremendous influence on many artists, myself included. Music is usually blasting away as I work and frequently one can find me singing along (badly) to whomever I am listening to. The artist Annie Clark (St. Vincent) has captivated me lately with her words and music and surely influenced the way these paintings turned out. The titles are her words.

These paintings created in 2017 mark my return to working in oil paint. For perhaps 25 years I have worked almost exclusively with acrylics, so I had to relearn how to paint with oils. The return has been a slow learning process and frankly, a trial-and-error experience. The first six paintings of this section are the only ones I hung in my show. I consider the rest sketches.
The INDIVISIBLE paintings are discrete from my other work as I joined artists of all kinds at this perilous time to make art with a political message.

A friend saw the first painting of this series and said, “Oh look, a rainbow flag.” I thought no, but well yes, it could be to you. The rainbow flag is also known as the pride flag and the peace flag. From the rainbow covenant of the bible to many of the pre-Columbian cultures to the peace movement of the 1960’s, the image has been a unifying icon. I decided why not take something so recognizable and meaningful to so many people, and develop it and deconstruct it and bring it back again through my art. Whether it be about our differences regarding gender equality, class struggle, racial prejudice or religious intolerance, perhaps something beautiful, harmonious and sacred can make a promise of unity of diversity through the power of color and light.
